  President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was appointed the South Asian Director General of United Nation Children's Fund (UNICEF) in 2006. She was a participant of the Clinton Global Initiative in 2006. This initiative aims to decrease poverty, combat issues related to climate change, improve governance and use religion as a force for reconciliation in developing countries.
